Introduction - History

The Department of Crop Science (DCS) of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) is the first University Department dedicated to the Science of Plant Crops in Greece and was established in June 1989 (P.D. 377/16-6-89, Government Gazette 166A').

Mission

The mission of the Department of Crop Science (DSC) of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) is to provide students with comprehensive scientific knowledge with the aim of enabling them to contribute to the qualitative and quantitative improvement of plant production, particularly in its sustainable and integrated dimension, as well as to conduct basic and applied research aiming to generate new knowledge in plant production sciences.

The DSC aims to contribute in every way to the economic and social development of the Greek Agriculture by solving problems that fall within the scientific fields it addresses. Additionally, the DSC must contribute to the rational utilization of plants, animals, and microorganisms in all areas of economic and social activity, including the protection and enhancement of the environment.

At the DSC of AUA, more than 2000 undergraduate students and over 250 postgraduate students and doctoral candidates are enrolled.

The DSC employs 54 Teaching Research Staff members, 23 Laboratory Teaching Staff members and 7 Technical staff members who teach and conduct research in the scientific fields addressed by the Department or work in the Department’s Laboratories.

Research is funded both by national resources and by international organizations and research programs.

With particular pride in our leading position in agricultural studies, we provide the most modern theoretical and practical education to the new generations of agronomists.

Evaluation

Quality Assurance Policy

Agricultural University of Athens implements a quality assurance policy, which is part of its strategic planning. This policy is developed and specialized in all areas of action of the Academic Unit of the Department of Crop Science. The Department is obliged to and implements the quality policy of the University, which is evaluated by the Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP) of the University. For this purpose, an Internal Evaluation Team (OMEA) has been established and operates.

The Department's Quality Policy aims at its continuous improvement and has the following specific objectives: (1) supporting the academic profile and orientation of the Study Program, (2) promoting its purpose and objectives, (3) implementing the strategic objectives of the Study Program, (4) determining the means of achieving it, and (5) implementing the appropriate quality procedures.

 

Quality Assurance Policy Statement

The mission of the Department of Crop Science is to provide students of Agricultural Sciences with up-to-date scientific knowledge necessary for the quantitative and qualitative improvement of crop production, especially in its sustainable and integrated dimension. This is achieved through teaching, internship programs, and diploma theses, in combination with basic and applied research to generate new knowledge in Crop Science. Beyond education and research, the Department contributes to the economic and social development of rural Greece and society at large, by offering solutions to problems within its fields of expertise.

The Department of Crop Science, in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Unit of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) and relevant institutional services, has aligned its Quality Assurance Policy with that of the University. The goal is to ensure and continuously improve the quality of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, offered either independently or in collaboration with other Departments of AUA or institutions in Greece and abroad.

 

Strategic Objectives of the Undergraduate Program

The Quality Assurance Policy of the Department is fully aligned with AUA's overall strategy, ensuring the Program's contribution to the strategic goals of excellence in education and research, and its engagement with society and its development. All quality assurance procedures are implemented in collaboration with the University’s Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP).

The Undergraduate Program is committed to promoting high-level learning outcomes in accordance with the principles of the National and European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education, Level 7. Specifically, the program is designed and implemented to:

  • Ensure learning outcomes: Guarantee that students acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies relevant to the discipline and societal and labor market needs.
  • Ensure teaching quality: Adopt modern teaching methods and technologies promoting student-centered learning and active engagement.
  • Enhance experiential learning: Conduct educational field trips across semesters and themes that enrich students’ educational experience and link theory to practice.
  • Link with the labor market: Continuously revise the curriculum to reflect scientific developments and professional challenges.
  • Connect teaching and research: Integrate modern research findings into course content to foster a research culture and knowledge dissemination.
  • Promote internationalization: Participate in mobility programs and establish new partnerships with foreign institutions to enhance the international dimension of the program.
  • Enhance recognition: Utilize international standards in course descriptions and aim for learning outcomes and qualifications aligned with European and National Qualifications Frameworks.

Internal Evaluation Team (OMEA)

The Department of Crop Science of the Agricultural University of Athens has as its mission the training of scientists specialized in research, the production of new knowledge and the solution of problems related to the qualitative and quantitative improvement of plant production, especially in its sustainable and integrated dimension.

The Quality Assurance Policy of the Crop Science Department is drawn up with a view to its mission and the professional rights guaranteed to graduates and is aligned with the Quality Assurance Policy of the Agricultural University of Athens for the continuous assurance of high quality educational, scientific, research and administrative work, in accordance with international academic standards and in particular that of the European Higher Education Area and in compliance with the Principles and guidelines of the National Authority of Higher Education (EHEA).

The Department's Quality Assurance Procedures are coordinated by the Department's Internal Evaluation Team (IET) in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Unit (QAUT) of the Agricultural University of Athens. All studies and evaluations are discussed at the Department Assembly, which makes specific decisions regarding actions for the continuous monitoring and improvement of the work produced.

Department Structure

The Department of Crop Science belongs to the School of Plant Sciences.

According to law 4957/2022, the administrative bodies of the Department are the General Assembly, the Administrative Board, the President of the Department, and the Vice-President of the Department.

The Department's General Assembly, among other responsibilities, supervises the operation and sets the general educational and research policies of the Department. It is responsible for announcing faculty positions, forming the relevant electoral bodies, drafting and revising the Undergraduate Program, establishing the Graduate Studies Committee, approving teaching materials, and allocating teaching assignments.

The Administrative Board consists of the President and the Vice-President of the Department, the Directors of the Divisions, and a representative of the Department's specialized personnel categories. The responsibilities of the Administrative Board are defined by the Department's General Assembly.

The President of the Department is the highest single-member administrative body of the Department. They convene and preside over General Assembly meetings, form committees for handling specific issues, oversee the educational and research activities of the Department, and ensure the implementation of decisions made by the General Assembly.
