Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
Laboratory of Pomology
Director: Professor Ioannis E. Papadakis
Tel: 210 5294590
Email: papadakis@aua.gr
Location: Main Building, 1st floor (Main Laboratory Facilities, Teaching Staff Offices, Teaching Room «E. Vathi»), Pomology Building (Lecture and Laboratory Rooms (A, B, and C) supporting both theoretical instruction and practical training), Pomology Orchard (3-hectare educational orchard, field exercises)
The Pomology Laboratory is dedicated to teaching and research in Pomology, focusing on fruit trees and fruit-bearing shrubs of the temperate, subtropical, and tropical zones. Its aim is to understand the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying growth, fruit bearing, and fruit quality, as well as to optimize cultivation practices for producing premium, high-value commodities.
The research activity of the Pomology Laboratory combines experimental field and laboratory research and focuses on the following topics:
- Evaluation of varieties and rootstocks of various fruit tree species.
- Study of abiotic stresses (water stress, salinity, nutrient deficiencies and toxicities of inorganic elements, frost damage, high temperatures, soil waterlogging/flooding) and methods to limit damage in fruit tree cultivation.
- Orchard design, training systems, and agronomic management practices.
- Mineral nutrition, fertilization strategies, and water use in fruit tree production.
- Tree growth physiology, photosynthesis, and carbohydrate partitioning.
- Fruit ripening physiology and biochemistry, and optimization of harvest timing.
- Tree propagation and nursery material production using conventional methods as well as tissue culture (in vitro).
- Pre- and post-harvest handling practices affecting the quality, nutritional value, and shelf life of fruits in storage facilities, as well as during their transportation and distribution through the supply chain for domestic and international markets.
- Use of Dynamic Controlled Atmospheres during storage of climacteric fruits, aiming to extend their post-harvest life.
- Investigation of appropriate storage conditions (temperature, packaging type, edible coatings, use of modified or controlled atmospheres, etc.), aiming to extend storage duration while simultaneously maintaining fruit quality and nutritional value.
Emphasis is placed on the adaptation of tree crops to changing climatic conditions and the challenges of climate change, the sustainable management of orchards, the assurance of the quality of produced goods, as well as the strengthening of the competitiveness of Greek fruits and nuts in international markets.
