Course Content

1. The concept of Tourism Development, its basic theories and its shaping factors.
2. Concept of Sustainable/Sustainable development, carrying capacity and principles of sustainable/sustainable tourism development
3. The standards of Tourism Development at an international level.
4. The characteristics of tourists and the evolutionary stages of tourism development in various destinations
5. The importance and role of state intervention in tourism in the form of tourism policy
6. The critical policy fields for tourism development 7. The relationship between tourism policy and policy for the economic development of a host country,
8. The formation of hotel capital as a driver of tourism and regional development
9. Differentiating products of the hospitality industry and its effects on tourism development
10. The development characteristics of Greek tourism and the role of the
hotel 11. Factors shaping tourist motivations for choosing Greece as a tourist destination
12. The effects of tourism development on the natural, built and man-made environment at various spatial scales in Greece
13. Tourism development approaches and development options in Greece: Greek tourism development patterns and sustainability
14. Sustainable tourism development and small and medium enterprises.
15. Sustainability certification systems in the tourism industry.
16. Creating value for the visitor as a Responsible Citizen (CCB).
17. Trends and perspectives of Greek tourism development.

Learning results

After completing the course, it is expected that students will be able to:

To understand the basic concepts and theoretical approaches related to development and tourism development.

To explain the causes of activation and the development factors of inbound tourism at the national and regional-local level.

Familiarize themselves with the tourism development standards that appear in the area and their characteristics.

To understand and interpret the physical and technical data of a place that functions as a tourist destination.

Critically analyze the impacts and potential challenges/obstacles faced by tourism development in different types of tourist destinations.

To analyze and evaluate plans and proposals for tourism development of a macroeconomic and microeconomic nature at the national and regional-local level.

To know and easily develop the necessary basic methods of measurement and analysis of the tourism phenomenon both at the market level and at the spatial (national, regional, local) level of its development.

To understand the elements that make up the modern tourism phenomenon in Greece and the factors that shape it

Interpret the developments and variables affecting tourism in Greece

The aim of the course is to describe and analyze the theoretical as well as the empirical framework of tourism development. This course deals with the concept and content of tourism development in combination with alternative theoretical approaches, conditions and its shaping factors. It emphasizes the dominant patterns of tourism development and their characteristics. Analyzing the social, cultural and environmental impacts of the tourism development of various destinations. As, now taking for granted that tourism development can act as a driver of wider development in a region, as an economic activity that will create multiplier benefits, in society, culture and the environment of each place - destination. The analysis of the aforementioned issues is complemented by the presentation of characteristic case studies at an international level. It also seeks to offer students a specific framework for understanding the importance of the tourism phenomenon in Greece, but also its decisive role in the development and increase of the competitiveness of our country as a tourist destination.
