LECTURES: Principles of Microbial Cell Physiology - Principles of Microbial Biotechnology - Microbial Fermentations in Liquid Culture Media / Solid-State Microbial Fermentations / Bioreactors - Biotechnological Utilization of Lignocellulosic Biomass by Microorganisms - Environmental Biotechnology / Biodegradation - Cultivation of Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms – Enzyme Biotechnology - Microbial Biosynthesis – Production of Metabolites (biofuels, biopolymers, food and feed additives, vitamins and amino acids, fatty acids, alkaloids and isoprenoids, non-ribosomal peptides and polyketides, etc.). LABORATORY ASSIGNMENTS: Aerobic Thermophilic Degradation of Plant Biomass (Composting) - Enzymatic Degradation of Cellulose and Lignin by Fungal Biocatalysts - Bioinformatics / Databases and Basic Computational Tools for the Study of Genes and Proteins - Primer Design for PCR and Applications, DNA Isolation, Bacterial Transformation, PCR, Recombinant Protein Expression, Protein Purification-Electrophoresis - Bacterial Conjugation and Mutation Repair - Growth Kinetics in Batch and Continuous Culture Systems / Types of Bioreactors.
