George Koutroutsios is an Assistant Professor at the Laboratory of General and Agricultural Microbiology at the Agricultural University of Athens, specializing in Mycology – Macromycetes. He completed his undergraduate studies at the School of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2006. He received a Master’s degree from the Department of Environment at the University of the Aegean in 2008 and obtained his PhD from the Department of Crop Science at the Agricultural University of Athens in 2019. From 2020 to 2022, he was awarded a postdoctoral research fellowship by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), which he conducted at the same institution.
His main activities and research interests include: mushroom cultivation, strain improvement of basidiomycetes and development of new strains/hybrids, investigation of the nutritional, dietary, and functional properties of fungal products, biotransformation and detoxification of agro-industrial by-products and other environmental pollutants, biodegradation of lignocellulosic residues using fungi, and fungal biodiversity.
