Course Content

URBAN POLICY AND URBAN POLICY EXERCISE AGENCIES: Urban policy exercisers, restrictions on urban land uses, Distribution of urban land between sectors, imposition of restrictions on urban land uses, regeneration of urban areas, URBAN POLICY AND URBAN POLICY EXERCISE BODIES: Inflow of the wealthy, the creation of green zones, legalization of arbitrarily structured buildings, building cooperatives, the basic strategies of the development of urban centers. INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF CITIES: Structure of cities, the concentric zone model, the radial sector model, the multiple core model CITY DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS IN GREECE: The development patterns of cities in Greece, the building factor and building density of cities, sparsely built or dense and cohesive city, building factor and land value. URBAN SPREAD AND NEIGHBORHOOD: Definition, forms of urban sprawl, causes and factors of urban sprawl, effects of urban sprawl, policies to limit the size of large cities and urban sprawl, the role of the neighborhood in the economy and development of the city, general characteristics and models of neighborhoods , technological developments and changes in neighborhood characteristics. URBAN ENVIRONMENT AND ECONOMY: The urban environment, city, sustainability and sustainability, principles of urban planning and organization of functions, land uses in the city and the urban environment, urban greenery and its environmental value, effects of transport networks on the urban environment, building and urban environment. URBAN TOURISM: Types of tourism, tourist flows, massiveness and competitiveness, tourism, urban and local development, the seasonality of tourism, urban tourism, characteristics of urban tourism, alternative forms of tourism in the urban area, factors shaping urban tourist attractiveness, effects of the urban tourism in cities. TRANSPORT NETWORKS AND THE CITY: Characteristics of urban transport, urban transport networks and land uses, forms of urban transport, types of urban networks, transport costs in urban transport, transport networks and urban environment, cities and Mass Transport (MMT). TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS AND THE CITY: Network analysis, finding the nearest route and least cost route, transport networks and urban sprawl, special topics on the impact of transport networks on urban development. CITIES AND DAILY TRAVEL OF WORKERS (COMMUTING): Daily commutes according to the means used, forms of commuting according to residential and work locations, forms of commuting according to distance, forms of commuting according to time, commuting distance and commuters, duration of commuting by purpose of work, Functional Urban Areas (UPA) in Greece and Europe, commuting for work and utility. COMPETITIVENESS OF CITIES: Definition, factors shaping urban competitiveness, measuring competitiveness, "smart" cities, place marketing, city branding, place positioning, city promotion strategy. URBAN PROPERTY MARKET AND VALUE: Basic Concepts, Real Estate Market Formation, Factors Changing Demand, Changes in Supply, Factors Changing Supply, Equilibrium in Real Estate Prices, Real Estate Market (Factors and Characteristics), Building by Method of consideration. MARKET AND VALUE OF URBAN REAL ESTATE: Factors shaping real estate value, case studies.

Learning results

After completing the course, it is expected that students will be able to:

To understand the fundamental concepts of urban economic and development and spatial analysis.

To know the basic economic forces that interact in the urban space, to understand the causes that cause urban inequalities and their spatial relations, to understand how the urban space affects the conduct of activities and development.

To understand the extension of the use of the concepts and tools of microeconomic analysis in matters of urban space, to know indicators and quantitative methods of measuring urban economic development and to measure with quantitative indicators the differential dynamics in the urban space distinguishing strong and weak areas.

To get to know how urban development is created and strengthened, the role of networks and infrastructures, different policies and incentives.

To know the different relationships that can be created between urban units and the process by which the development of one urban unit contributes to the development of others, to know different schools of thought around this issue and wider urban relations.
