Welcome of the Dean

Welcome to the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences webpage

The School of Food and Nutritional Sciences came into existence after breaking down of the former School of Food, Biotechnology and Development into three, newly established, Schools in our University. It consists of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and the new Department of Dietetics and Quality of Life.

The creation of the School is a relatively new fact but also a new beginning for the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). Indeed, education in the AUA is currently facing unprecedented challenges, as it has to serve contemporary Agriculture, claiming new roles in the whole range of the Agri-Food Sector from Primary Production and Processing to Marketing & Services, Nutrition and finally the Quality of Life and its evolution with the utilization of technology.

In this direction, our School - with its differentiated character - plays a key role in cognitive subjects beyond the "traditional" agricultural sector. These subjects cover Food Science and Nutrition and Dietetics and Quality of Human Life.

The primary mission of the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences is to inform both students and the wider society about the role of food and nutrition in improving health and well-being, not only within local communities, but also globally through integrated education and research.

Its educational mission is to provide undergraduate and postgraduate degrees related to food and human nutrition. Its research mission is to promote, develop and support research programs that will help identify and solve problems related to food, nutrition and quality of life. The approach being followed is raising awareness in food and nutrition issues, supporting local and global food and nutrition initiatives and empowering collaboration between individuals and organizations for the improvement of nutrition and therefore, good health.

To achieve the above, we look forward to a different model of education, the main strategic objectives of which should be:

1. Renewed and contemporary education, adapted to the new demands and challenges of society, within a rapidly changing global reality.

2. Search for funding for education and research through the reciprocal development of research, creation and innovation, providing not only for the needs of today, but also for new areas that will come up in the long run and in which we should invest in order to create NEW KNOWLEDGE.

It is our conviction that, even in today's difficult situation, we can stand out, leaving our mark on the local and global landscape of higher education. The internationally proven extroversion and academic excellence of the members of Teaching, Research and Laboratory Staff of our School, along with the modernized curricula of the study programs of its Departments, guarantee the achievement of this goal. Against all odds and utilizing all the available possibilities, we will give our best in order to provide the best possible education at undergraduate and postgraduate level and we will set the bar high in our research presence.
