Agricultural Holdings
It is located at Aliarto in the Boeotia regional unit, 120 kilometers north of Athens. Its area is about 100 hectares, and it is divided into eleven (11) plots that are cultivated with arable crops (cotton, corn, alfalfa, cereals, etc.). The soil is rich in organic matter and calcium. There is an underground irrigation system with surface leads and synchronous meteorological station with automatic data recording- system and sensors that measure air and soil temperature profiles, solar radiation, atmospheric humidity and wind speed at various levels. The farm is fully equipped with agricultural machinery and tools. At the holding ,there is also a small house for the staff, two storage sheds for the mechanical equipment, the agricultural supplies and the harvested products.
It is located 35 kilometers west of Athens, a short distance from the municipality of Spata. Its area is 37,5 hectares and is mainly cultivated with vines and olives. The vineyard is about 24 hectares, where five wine grape varieties are cultivated (Savatiano, Roditis, Asyrtiko, Athiri and Malagouzia). The vines have a linear configuration and are irrigated with drip irrigation system. The production process complies with the requirements of the Integrated Production Management System AGRO 2.1/2.2, aiming at α balanced environmental management and high-quality products. Part of the production is vinified and promoted for sale under the brand name "GNOSI" of the University (by the Asset Management and Development Company of Agriculture University of Athens S.A.). The olive grove covers an area of 4,5 hectares and the old olive mill 0.45 hectares. The holding is equipped with synchronous agricultural machinery and tools. There is also a small house for the staff, a storage shed for agricultural supplies and products and a shed for the mechanical equipment.
It was built in the 1970s and was completely renovated in 2018. Its extent is about 0.17 hectares. It consists of four (4) rooms, a mother plantation room where there are the main species of ornamental plants that are produced, a propagation room with heated rooting benches and a misting system and two other rooms that host over one hundred (100) indoor and outdoor ornamental plants, in pots, for sale. At the same time, there is an outdoor area, approximately 0.1 hectares, which hosts over fifty (50) species of plants for sale, outdoor ornamentals, seasonal flowering plants, perennial flowering and herbs, olive trees and citrus trees. Also, three (3) types of molts (soil mix for plants) are produced and available for sale with the University's brand name "GNOSI" (one for General Use, one for Acidophilus Plants and one for Cacti & Succulents).
The farms and the greenhouse are being “good standards” which are also used for educational and research purposes, as well as places for internships and seasonal work for the students.
The “Asset Management and Development Company of Agriculture University of Athens S.A”, which was founded in 1993 (Government Gazette 114/09.07.1993), https://aua-gnosis.gr/, is responsible for the financial management of the holdings.
The earnings from the management of these holdings are intended for the operational and production costs at the farms, as well as, for part of the needs of the University.
