Spyros Alexiou is a faculty member of the Agricultural University of Athens, at the rank of Lecturer.
He holds a degree in Tourism Business Administration (T.E.I. Athens), a degree in Economics (University of Athens), an MSc in Tourism Management and Marketing (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, with a scholarship from the I.K.Y.), and a PhD in Planning and Policy Development of Tourist Destinations (Panteion University of Social and Political Studies, Department of Economic and Regional Development).

He has worked for many years in hotel companies, while since 2000 he has been teaching in higher education at the TEI of Epirus (2000–2006), the TEI of Sterea Ellada (former TEI of Lamia) (2006–2019), and since 2019 at the Agricultural University of Athens, Department of Regional and Economic Development.
He has also supervised many theses.
Furthermore, he has extensive administrative experience as President/Head of the Departments he has served, as a member of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Management and Economics, and as President and member of many committees.
During the period 2015–2017, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Tourism Organization (GNTO).
Research interests: His research interests include local and regional development, mountain tourism, alternative forms of tourism, tourism marketing, and SMEs.
He has also published a significant number of publications and presentations in international magazines and conferences.
