Course Content

  1. Historical and conceptual introduction to the science of sociology, the sociological approach, the theoretical approaches of functionalism, social conflict and social interaction.
  2. Culture, components of culture, social structure, social positions, social roles, social groups, social institutions, categorization of societies.
  3. The concept of socialization, theories of socialization, agents of socialization, social communication, socialization in the life cycle (childhood, adolescence, young adults, middle age, old age, death).
  4. Group relations, group dynamics, group size, leadership, social laziness, social dilemmas of group members, groupthink, conformity, types of formal organizations, the bureaucracy in the light of different theoretical approaches, sociology of work, changes in working life, job satisfaction and alienation, alternative forms for a more human work.
  5. Deviant behavior, social control and deviance, types of crimes, the system criminal justice.
  6. The concept of social stratification, types of social stratification, social mobility, interpretations of social stratification.
  7. Racial and ethnic stratification, racial categories, ethnic and minority groups, racism, prejudice, social discrimination, assimilation and pluralism.
  8. Sex stratification, sexism and patriarchy, gender inequality, sociological approaches to gender stratification.
  9. Forms of power, political power, state, types of governments, economic power, economic systems, business power, national and multinational businesses, business control.
  10. The structure of the family, types of family, sociological approaches to the family.
  11. Religion, categories of religions, religion and secularization, theoretical approaches to religion.
  12. The role of education in the light of different theoretical approaches.
  13. The concept of the health system, theoretical approaches to health and disease.
  14. Population changes, urban environment, ecological environment, sociological approaches to the environment.

Social change and causes of social change, social movements, future perspectives.

Learning results

After completing the course, students:

they will understand the subject of sociology and basic theoretical approaches of sociology,

they will describe ways of social organization and the special characteristics of modern social organization,

they will recognize social phenomena and events, social structures, social institutions, social roles and social relationships,

they will distinguish the differences between social groups, social groups and social categories,

they will understand the process and mechanisms of socialization, as well as the role of its agents,

discuss issues of group dynamics such as group size, leadership, teamwork, social laziness, social dilemmas, groupthink and conformity;

they will recognize types of typical organizations of socio-economic life,

they will analyze the modern organization of work and economic life,

they will discuss the functions of the family and contemporary changes in family structures and family life,

they will understand the concept of social stratification and identify cases of social inequalities,

will discuss issues of power and contemporary political organization,

they will understand crime as a social phenomenon, they will distinguish types of deviant behavior,

they will discuss the role of religion in social and economic life,

they will perceive diversity as an element of society, they will identify examples of prejudice,

they will explain the social functions of the school and argue about the role of education in the reproduction or change of society
