Course Content

Overview of consumer and firm preferences, market equilibrium and efficiency, market failure, price discrimination, games, oligopoly, price war and strategies, horizontal mergers and market structure, vertical integration, product differentiation innovation, advertising, network markets, market intermediation, competition policy .

Learning results

The learning outcomes of the course are:

Industrial organization deals with the functioning of markets and sectors of the economy and the way businesses compete with each other. It studies the strategies of firms in a market eg price competition, product positioning, advertising, research and development. Industrial organization is primarily concerned with the operations and organization of oligopolies and the degree of firm market power, the maintenance and acquisition of market power, and the consequences of a firm's market power. It also introduces the student to reflection on the role of the state and its industrial policy.
