Stavroula Galanopoulou

Brief CV

Dr. Stavroula Galanopoulou is an environmental geochemist whose research spans soil and sediment geochemistry, mineralogy, and contamination assessment. She earned her PhD in Geological Sciences from the National Technical University of Athens, where her doctoral research examined the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of marine surface sediments in the Keratsini Harbour area. She also holds a DEA in Environmental Geosciences from the Université de Droit, d’Économie et des Sciences d’Aix-Marseille III, France, and a BSc in Geology from the University of Patras, Greece.

Her scholarly work focuses on the environmental fate and behavior of heavy metals and organic pollutants, the geochemical and mineralogical characterization of soil and sedimentary systems, and the assessment of environmental quality and soil system resilience. She has authored publications in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to collective scientific volumes, and regularly presents her research at national and international scientific conferences.

Dr. Galanopoulou has extensive academic teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, delivering courses in geology, mineralogy, environmental chemistry, soil fertility, and hydrology. She has supervised numerous undergraduate dissertations, several master’s theses, and one doctoral dissertation. She has also designed and implemented laboratory and field-based courses in environmental geochemistry, mineralogy, and forest soil science, contributing to curriculum development and hands-on geoscience education.

Her academic service includes coordinating Erasmus+ mobility programmes, serving on departmental administrative bodies, and participating in academic committees and evaluation boards. She is also a member of the administration board of the Special Research Funds Account, with responsibilities in research project oversight and strategic resource management.

Beyond academia, she has worked as a geological and environmental consultant. She has contributed to EU- and nationally funded research projects—including Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020—focused on environmental monitoring, agroforestry, soil management, and ecosystem resilience. She is actively involved in training and capacity-building programmes related to these fields.

Dr. Galanopoulou is a member of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece and the Scientific Personnel Association of the Agricultural University of Athens.
