Undergraduate Studies
The Undergraduate Study Program of the Department is designed by the Department’s General Assembly and is evaluated/updated in accordance with current legislation and the decisions of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), in order to align and adapt it to current scientific/research developments and professional requirements. It is approved by the Senate. The Department has developed a course allocation plan across the ten (10) semesters of the study duration.
Each student has the ability to shape their individual Study Program by selecting and submitting their course declarations at the beginning of each semester. Courses (mandatory or compulsory elective) are attended only by students of the corresponding semester or higher. It is not permitted for students to attend courses from semesters lower than the one in which the course is placed in the Study Program.
To obtain the degree, 300 ECTS credits are required, which include the Diploma Thesis (30 ECTS credits) and the Internship (10 ECTS credits). At the beginning of each semester, instructors are required to announce the teaching plan, which includes the course syllabus broken down by week for the 13 weeks of instruction. Changes to the teaching plan are possible in exceptional cases.
The total number of courses offered by the Study Program is 79. Regarding the type of courses:
- 46 are Mandatory (M),
- 29 are Compulsory Elective (CE), and
- 4 (English language courses) are conditionally mandatory (required for students who do not hold a recognized English language certificate of at least B2 level).
Specifically, the English language is taught in the Department as a compulsory course during the first four (4) semesters. According to the decisions of the Senate of the Agricultural University of Athens (152/28-05-92 and 166/13-07-93), students who hold English language certificates at a level of at least B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe are exempted from the English language course. The Rector’s Council of the Agricultural University of Athens (meeting of 13-09-94) decided that the English language course would not be graded using the standard grading scale, but instead would be evaluated as “Satisfactory” / “Unsatisfactory.”
A prerequisite for obtaining the degree for students who are not exempt from the foreign language requirement is successful participation in the examinations of all four semesters of the course.
The total required ECTS credits of the Department’s Undergraduate Study Program amount to 300, distributed as follows:
- 260 ECTS corresponds to 55 courses (46 Mandatory and 9 Compulsory Elective),
- 30 ECTS corresponds to the Diploma Thesis, which meets the requirements of a postgraduate-level thesis. Its duration is at least one (1) academic semester. The Diploma Thesis is examined and graded by a three-member committee, including the supervising professor, on a scale from 0 to 10, with a minimum passing grade of 5, and
- 10 ECTS correspond to the Internship, which takes place in companies or organizations related to Forestry and the Natural Environment. It has a total duration of two (2) months, is usually carried out in July and August during the 8th semester of studies, and is not graded.
At the beginning of each semester, students are required to renew their enrollment and submit their laboratory attendance declaration electronically through the student portal estudent.aua.gr, within deadlines announced by the University’s IT Department. (The announcement is posted on the Department’s website and sent to students’ institutional emails.)
During the first and second semesters of study, students may only enroll in the courses of the first and second semesters, respectively.
- Considering that each academic year consists of two (2) semesters (fall and spring), at the beginning of each semester (September/October for the fall semester and February for the spring semester, as announced by AUA), students declare the courses they will attend during the upcoming semester. They are required to attend the courses of their standard semester and may additionally attend up to three (3) lecture courses and three (3) laboratories from previous semesters that they have not yet completed. Specifically:
— During enrollment in September/October (on dates specified by AUA), students declare the courses of their standard semester and up to three (3) lectures and three (3) laboratories from previous fall semesters they have not yet attended.
— During enrollment in February (on dates specified by AUA), students declare the courses of their standard semester and up to three (3) lectures and three (3) laboratories from previous spring semesters they have not yet attended.
- Regarding examinations, considering that there are three exam periods (January, June, and September), students are entitled to participate after registering through the Secretariat’s electronic system on specific dates announced by AUA for each examination period. Students may only register for exams in courses they have declared and attended in the current or previous academic years. Specifically:
— In the fall semester, students may register for three (3) lectures and three (3) laboratories from courses of the previous fall semester for the January exam period.
— In the spring semester, students may register for three (3) lectures and three (3) laboratories from courses of the previous spring semester for the June exam period.
— In September, students may register for all courses and laboratories of the last two semesters (fall and spring), and additionally six (6) lectures and six (6) laboratories from previous semesters. - Students who have already passed a course with a grade of five (5.0) or higher are not allowed to register and retake that course.
- Final-year students may register for all courses from the fall and spring semesters in any exam period, provided they have attended them.
The recognition of courses in cases of transfer or placement from other Schools or Departments is carried out upon application by the interested student and by decision of the Department’s General Assembly. Courses recognized as completed are those in which transferred or admitted students have already passed exams at the School or Department from which they come, provided that these courses belong to the same or a similar field of study as the courses taught in the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management. Admitted students are exempted from examination in the courses in which they have already been assessed for their admission, provided that these courses correspond to courses in the Department’s Study Program.
In all other respects, the provisions of the applicable legislation and the relevant decisions of the collective bodies of the Higher Education Institution, School, or Department receiving the transferred or admitted student shall apply.
The duration of studies also includes time spent attending an international or European educational program at a Higher Education Institution. Likewise, the corresponding grades are taken into account and are converted to the grading scale used in the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management, in accordance with the relevant educational agreement and the transcript of records, as provided by the provisions of Ministerial Decision Φ5/89656/Β3/2007 of the Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs, concerning the “Implementation of the credit transfer and accumulation system.”
Grades from courses at foreign Higher Education Institutions must be certified by an original official document issued by the foreign institution, bearing the relevant certification as required by applicable international agreements. In all other respects, the provisions of the aforementioned ministerial decision apply.
Students have the right to suspend their studies for up to four (4) semesters, either consecutively or in parts, upon submitting a relevant application to the Secretariat and returning their student ID card. The application (which students can find at https://www2.aua.gr/el/info/aitiseis) must be submitted to the Secretariat no later than ten (10) days after the beginning of the semester, provided that the student has already enrolled in that semester.
During the period of suspension of studies, student status is not maintained, nor is the right to participate in examinations, and the duration of the suspension is not counted towards the total duration of studies. Upon completion of the suspension period, studies resume from the semester in which they were suspended, following a new application by the student.
Students have the right to withdraw from the Department by submitting a written declaration to the Secretariat. The required documents for withdrawal are as follows:
- Application form – Responsible declaration for withdrawal from the AUA registry (https://www2.aua.gr/el/info/aitiseis)
- The Academic ID card must be returned (either in person or by mail) to the Secretariat.
Students are also removed from the Department upon completion of the maximum period of study and failure to meet the extension conditions provided in Article 76 of Law 4957/2022 (A’ 141), as amended by Law 5224/2025.
Students complete their studies and are awarded their degree when they have fulfilled the required duration of study, passed all the courses specified in the Study Program, and accumulated the required number of credit units (ECTS corresponding to the teaching units).
To obtain the degree of the Department, the completion of a Diploma Thesis (DT) is required. The number of available theses and their topics are determined by the faculty members. Each professor has the right to supervise up to five (5) theses per semester. In cases where the number of required theses exceeds the number of faculty members, more than five theses may be assigned to a professor.
The planning of the Diploma Thesis is carried out under the responsibility of the supervising professor in collaboration with the student. The aim of the thesis is, on the one hand, to introduce the student to the research process and, on the other hand, to develop research activities by investing in the Department’s human resources. The student may choose the scientific field in which they wish to carry out their Diploma Thesis, in collaboration with the Department’s faculty members.
The Diploma Thesis is completed with the writing of the study and its public defense before a three-member examination committee, which constitutes its final evaluation. It is the student’s final requirement for obtaining the degree. The thesis accounts for 30 ECTS credits within the total curriculum and is graded on a scale from 0 to 10, with a minimum passing grade of 5. The thesis is presented and evaluated on a date set by the examination committee. The process of preparing the Diploma Thesis is described in detail in the Regulations for Diploma Theses.
The Internship (Practical Training) is a requirement for the award of the degree. The Internship has a duration of two (2) months, is not graded, but carries ten (10) ECTS credits.
The purpose of the Internship is to give students of the Department the opportunity for their first contact with the reality of the labor market, while also enabling the Department to establish links with companies and independent professionals in the field. Through the Internship, students broaden their professional prospects in areas related to their studies and acquire the necessary flexibility required by modern social, economic, and political conditions.
Through the Study Information System (https://estud.aua.gr:8443/estudent/), students declare, on specific dates announced by the Agricultural University of Athens, the host organization where they wish to carry out their Internship. The Internship is usually conducted during the summer months (July and August) of the 8th semester of studies.
Special provisions apply for carrying out the Internship at a time different from the predefined period, or for students who are permanently employed or working under indefinite-term contracts in public sector organizations or the wider public sector, in a position related to the field of studies of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management.
The Internship (Practical Training) may be carried out in private or public organizations, as well as in laboratories of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) or other research institutions, provided that it is supervised by an agricultural scientist or a professional of another specialty approved by the Department.
The implementation of the Internship is monitored by the appointed supervisors, who are faculty members of the Department. They communicate with the “employers” to assess the student’s consistency as well as their performance in relation to the assigned work.

Ακαδημαϊκοί Σύμβουλοι
Academic Advisors are appointed each academic year by the Department’s General Assembly, with the aim of ensuring better organization and the successful completion of students’ studies.
Academic Advisors are faculty members of the Department who, through discussion, can assist students with academic matters such as course selection, managing issues related to the study program, and clarifying any questions regarding the procedures established by the Department. They also act as a link between students and university services, such as Student Welfare, the Internship Office, or the Student Ombudsman, etc.
It is very important for students to know their assigned academic advisor and to have at least one meeting with them each academic year.
