Current and recent projects

Petros Kofakis actively participates in the following projects:

2022-Today: National Technical University of Athens – UPWATER

"Understanding groundwater Pollution to protect and enhance WATER quality (UPWATER)"

EU funded project, DOI 10.3030/101081807

The main goal of UPWATER project is to assess the effectiveness of different preventive measures (e.g. regulation, governance, and other non-technological measures) to minimise the release of chemicals at source. However, in order to achieve this goal, it will be required to:

  1. increase the scientific knowledge on the identification, occurrence and fate of pollutants in the GW;
  2. develop and apply cost-efficient sampling methods based on passive samplers for chemicals and pathogens;
  3. develop source apportionment methods to identify and quantify the pollution sources, including isotopes tracers;
  4. develop water quality modeling tools to update existing hydrogeological models and to be used to;
  5. simulate scenarios for the proposed measures under multiple stressors and climate change (CC) projections;
  6. develop a framework for integrated risk analysis and impact assessment; and finally
  7. develop a participatory framework to analyse and prioritise the non-technological preventive measures and provide policy recommendations at local and EU levels.

The second goal is to develop and validate bio-based engineered natural treatment systems designed as mitigation solutions to protect GW pollution. The performance of these bio-based mitigation measures will be evaluated and their scaling-up will be simulated to assess the potential environmental benefits for a broad adoption.
The monitoring, modelling and mitigation solutions will be validated in 3 case studies (DK, GR and ES), representing different GW pollution problems in different socio-economical contexts, hydrogeological and climate conditions. The preventive measures will be defined and analysed with the involvement of the relevant local/regional stakeholders in a participatory approach.

2021-2023: National Technical University of Athens – ePYRROS
"ePYRROS: Development of an integrated monitoring network of water-environmental parameters in the Louros-Arachthos-Ambrakis system for the optimal management of water systems and the upgrading of the quality of agricultural production" (ESPA Program "SUPPORT OF REGIONAL EXCELLENCE").
The e-PYRROS project aims to develop an integrated monitoring network of hydro-environmental parameters in the (continuous) Louros-Arachthos-Amvrakikos system for: (a) the optimal management of water resources, (b) the monitoring of agrochemical substances in all hydrological zones (superficial, saturated and unsaturated), (c) the improvement of local agricultural ecosystems and consequently (d) the upgrading of the quality of agricultural production.
The e-PYRROS program uses two stages to achieve its objectives: (a) design, development and testing of prototype monitoring systems (field-scale sensor technologies combined with commercial hydro-environmental monitoring systems) and (b) integration of the technologies in web-based support systems. Among the main derivatives of the e-PYRROS project is an online knowledge system which will integrate point-based hydro-environmental data (monitoring technologies), wide spatial scale data (remote sensing technologies) and high-level ICT tools (models, applications, etc. .) to quantify the agronomic, economic and environmental impacts on agricultural ecosystems caused by the use of agrochemicals.

2019-2022: National Library of Greece
"Information System for the Optimal Handling of Documents" in the new building of the National Library. The system -consisting of open source hardware and software components- optimizes the process of internal handling (logistics) of books from the shelf to the library visitor and vice versa, significantly improving all the relevant efficiency indicators (e.g. time, distance, number of routes, transported quantity of material-load, capacity).
