Georgios Sp. Efthimiou

Brief Curriculum Vitae

Georgios Sp. Efthimiou is a Professor at the Department of Agricultural Business Administration and Supply Systems (DIGESE), of the School of Applied Economics & Social Sciences of the Agricultural University of Athens, with a subject area of ​​study “Structure, Dynamics, Protection of Riparian Forests and Environmental Management of Protected Areas”.

He teaches in undergraduate and postgraduate study programs of the A.E.I. He teaches in the Postgraduate Studies Program (P.M.S.) “Sustainable Development” of the Department of Home Economics and Sustainable Development (former Department of Home Economics and Ecology) of Harokopio University, continuously, for the period from A.E. 2005-2006, until today, the courses: Natural Resources Management and Integrated Ecosystem Management. From 2018 to 2020, he was Deputy Director of the Master's Degree Program "Ecology and Environmental Management" of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) and taught in the following thematic units: Ecology and Natural Resources, Grassland and Riparian Ecosystems, Wetlands, Management of Protected Areas, Wetlands and Riparian Forests, Outdoor Recreation - Alternative Forms of Tourism, and Phytotechnical Methods for Ecosystem Restoration.

Before his academic career, he has worked: a) as a Forester - researcher with a 3rd Class Researcher degree in the study category 24 and 2nd Class in the study category 25, b) as a seasonal Forester in the Forest Service, c) as a Forester in the Department of Greenery and Environment of ENATIA ODOS S.A., d) as Dr. Forester - Special Technical Scientist at the Forest Research Institute of NAGREF.

Since 2019, he has been a faculty member of the Agricultural University of Athens. From 2006 - 2018, he taught as a permanent teaching staff at the Technical Institute of Larissa and the Technical Institute of Central Greece. He served as President of the General Department of the AUA. (2024 – 2025), Vice President of the General Department of the AAU (2022 – 2023), Member of the AUA INTEGRATION COUNCIL (2022-2023), Member of the AUA Senate (2024-2025), Alternate Member of the AUA Senate (2022-2023), Alternate Member of the AUA SPECIAL FUND (2022-2023), Member of the Formation of the Research and Management Committee of the Special Research Funds Account (EL.KE.) of the AUA (2020 – 2021 & 2024 – 2025).

He has a rich published research work in scientific journals of international prestige with reviews  and participation in international and national scientific conferences with periodicity and criticism. His scientific recognition is significant, as shown by the numerous references to the published work. He has been selected as a national expert for Greece on Forest Restoration issues for the European Green Deal Horizon 2020 Project SUPERB on upscaling forest restoration. He is a Member of the Scientific Committee of the Management Body of the Oiti National Park from 2004  to the present. He served for more than a decade (2010 – 2020), as an Associate Special Scientist at the Management Body of the Parnassos National Park (Government Gazette 339/19-10-2010). He is a member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of many international and national conferences. He is a reviewer in scientific journals and conferences. He is a member of many scientific organizations with ecological and environmental interest.

His scientific and research interests focus on: Environment, Sustainable Development, sustainable management of ecosystems, environmental impact assessment, restoration of disturbed ecosystems, management of wetland ecosystems, management of water resources, protection and management of protected areas (national parks, Natural Monuments, Wetlands, NATURA 2000 network areas), habitat and habitat restoration, natural resource management, riparian ecosystems, management of visitor numbers in national parks and wetlands, alternative forms of Tourism, Environmental Education.

The Department was created in 2019 (article 20, Law 4589/2019) and is an evolution of the Supply Systems Management Department (D.S.E.). Housed in a 770 sq.m. building. within a plot with a total area of 8,000 sq.m. in facilities with extensive research and teaching spaces.
