DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT
& AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING

About
Panagiotis D. Oikonomou joined the Department of Natural Resources Development and Agricultural Engineering at the Agricultural University of Athens in 2023 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Water Resources Management, with an emphasis on Hydroinformatics and Stressed Water Systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Water Resources Planning and Management from Colorado State University.

Prior to joining the Agricultural University of Athens, he held postdoctoral research positions at the Colorado Water Institute and the University of Vermont. He subsequently served as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Vermont.

His research develops next-generation computational methods to understand, forecast, and manage complex water and environmental systems facing increasing water stress, environmental change, and hydroclimatic extremes, including droughts and floods. Working at the intersection of water resources engineering, hydroinformatics, and systems science, he integrates process-based models, Earth observations, artificial intelligence, data assimilation, and systems analysis to improve environmental forecasting and decision support. His research spans hydrology, water quality, climate resilience, hydroinformatics, and environmental systems, with applications ranging from integrated early warning systems and digital water systems to the sustainable management of interconnected Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystem (WEFE) resources. His long-term research vision is to advance resilient, intelligent, and operational environmental forecasting systems that support water resources management.
